A Start Up Roadshow came to Canterbury recently as part of a search for the most exciting start-ups in the South East.
The event, held at the Fruitworks Co-working centre in Canterbury in September, was one of a series of business advice and networking events hosted by the South East Angels with the support of NatWest Bank. This award-winning early-stage business investment club, based in Brighton, chose Canterbury as one of a just a few locations in the South East to showcase opportunities available for the county’s entrepreneurs.
The event was a platform for start-ups to showcase their ideas. It included a talk on raising funding, a start-up pitch competition judged by a panel of investor judges, and fantastic networking opportunities. Competition winners receive a press package, investment readiness support and the opportunity to meet with potential investors.
It was a packed audience for the Canterbury event with over 60 businesses taking part.
Peter Davies, Joint Chief Executive of Canterbury City Council, said:
“Private sector investment is the lifeblood of a successful economy like Canterbury’s. Angel investment syndicates play a key role in validating, refining and scaling up businesses across the UK. They have the potential to transform ideas into a sustainable livelihood for people and the well-paying jobs we want to encourage here.”
South East Angels is a growing syndicate of investors specialising in technology-based businesses at a prototyping and early revenue stage. Members invested £1.1m last year in some of the region’s most exciting start-ups and scale-ups.
Jake Fox, Syndicate Lead for South East Angels said:
“We had a fantastic morning at Startup Roadshow with the Kent startup ecosystem, bringing together early-stage startup founders, angels, VCs and the wider startup ecosystem for a morning of networking and startup pitches. Canterbury, and the wider Kent startup ecosystem has a huge network of talented founders, and it’s a pleasure to connect with them to support their funding journey as the most active angel network in the South East.”[NC1]
