Canterbury district is home to a diverse range of employers – from health and hospitality to manufacturing and science research. These contribute significantly to the local economy and provide a wealth of opportunities for people and supply chain businesses in the area.  

There are over 73,500 people of working age living here, a number that increases further with the thousands of people who graduate each year from the universities and specialist schools for engineering and medicine located in the district.   

Creating a high-skilled economy

At the heart of the city’s economic landscape is the University of Kent, a major higher education institution that employs thousands of academic and administrative staff. The university together with the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) and Canterbury Christ Church University is not only driving innovation and research but also supports the local economy through student spending, collaboration with industry and exciting spin-out companies. Many of these are driving the latest innovations in industries key to the future UK economy, including life science research, automation and green energy. 

A dynamic place to work

Retail giants and local businesses add to Canterbury’s employment landscape. Whitefriars Shopping Centre, hosts numerous national and international brands, providing a mix of retail and service sector jobs. Local authorities and public services, including Canterbury City Council, further contribute to the employment market, offering roles in governance, community services, and urban development. Together, these employers help sustain a vibrant, multifaceted economy in Canterbury, making it a dynamic place to work.

Kent and Canterbury Hospital, part of the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is another large employer, offering a wide range of roles in medical, administrative, and support services. In addition, Canterbury’s thriving tourism sector, bolstered by its rich history and cultural heritage, supports a variety of jobs in hospitality, retail, and tourism management, with attractions like Canterbury Cathedral and the city’s historic sites drawing visitors from around the world.

Coastal locations that drive success 

The coastal parts of the district are a key area for business park and commercial development and with the cosmopolitan city of Canterbury and the Channel Ports nearby, it’s no surprise that some of our biggest employers choose to locate here. Businesses such as marine engineering experts Woodfield Systems, advanced fire security specialists, EMS Limited and furniture manufacturer Crown Imperial are all leading in their respective fields – and we’re proud to have them building their success right here in Canterbury.
