Working in partnership 

2024 was the 20th anniversary of the first business improvement district (BID) pilot with Canterbury the first in Kent. It helps to ensure that investment in the city is based on the priorities of the business community. 

The board of the Canterbury BID includes representatives from 650+ town centre businesses, the University of Kent and the City Council – all working together for a common goal – improving Canterbury.

The Tales of England project 

Canterbury City Council was awarded nearly £20 million in Levelling Up Funding for its ‘Connected Canterbury: Unlocking the Tales of England project. 

Plans to to revitalise the city’s public spaces include renovating Canterbury Castle and re-opening it to the public, opening an events space in Westgate Square near Westgate Tower and creating new heritage routes, including along the City Wall. 

Future Plans for Canterbury West 

Canterbury is already known for its heritage and high-quality of life with a booming co-working sector for micro-businesses and entrepreneurs. Places like the Fruitworks, the Quarter Café and the Canterbury Innovation Centre have proved popular, particularly for those working in the creative sector. 

Future plans for Canterbury will help to further develop the city’s commercial potential, with ambitions for a landmark mixed use innovation district centred around Canterbury’s high-speed train line, providing Grade A office, workshop and studio accommodation.
