Canterbury is evolving, and the Connected Canterbury initiative www.canterbury.gov.uk/luf is at the heart of this exciting transformation. Supported by nearly £20 million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund with further contributions from Canterbury City Council the programme of work will be completed by summer of 2026.

Once finished key parts of the city’s heritage will be enhanced making these more usable and accessible to everyone.  Public areas including green spaces are being upgraded while connectivity between these sites and settings is being improved.  This programme will create a vibrant, accessible, and sustainable environment for residents and visitors alike.

Through these developments, Canterbury is not only preserving its rich history but also setting the stage for a brighter, greener, and more connected future.

Restoring heritage

One of the most exciting aspects of Connected Canterbury is the careful restoration of historic sites across the district. Key projects include:

  • Poor Priests’ Hospital – the roof and masonry have been restored, safeguarding centuries of history; and
  • Canterbury Castle – the ancient walls are being repaired and a new walkway and viewing platform will give visitors a unique perspective of the castle while respecting wildlife and heritage protections.

These efforts ensure that Canterbury’s landmarks remain not only preserved but also celebrated as living parts of the city.

Enhancing public spaces

From bustling squares to serene gardens, Connected Canterbury is revitalising the places where people come together. Some highlights include:

  • Westgate Square – excavation work has uncovered historic foundations, blending the city’s story with modern upgrades that allow public events and activities to be held.
  • Greyfriars Gardens – a new playground designed by Will Hardie of Amazing Spaces will provide a space for families and community events.
  • Dane John Gardens – and new cafe and improved paths, seating, and landscaped areas will enhance accessibility and enjoyment as well as preserving the ancient mound.

Other public spaces, including St Mary Bredman Square, St Radigund’s Gardens, and Three Cities Garden, are also being upgraded with improved seating, pathways, and planting, creating inviting spaces for relaxation, culture, and recreation.

Connecting the city

Connected Canterbury isn’t just about beautifying spaces – it’s about making the district more navigable and accessible:

  • Cycling and Walking – over 6 km of new cycleways, upgraded crossings, and improved footways will encourage active and sustainable travel.
  • Public Transport Hubs – St George’s Lane bus station improvements and enhanced signage will make it easier for everyone to move around the city.
  • Green Arrival Points – welcoming gateways, improved lighting, and new EV charging points will enhance first impressions for visitors while supporting sustainability.

Celebrating stories and community

Connected Canterbury also focuses on storytelling and interpretation, linking heritage with public spaces through signage, trails, and digital content. This project brings the district’s rich history to life, ensuring that residents and visitors alike can explore Canterbury’s fascinating past while enjoying modern amenities.

The initiative actively involves the community, from local businesses to cultural organisations, ensuring that everyone has a role in shaping the city’s future.

Looking forward

Connected Canterbury is more than a single regeneration programme – it’s a celebration of what makes Canterbury unique.  By blending historic preservation, modern infrastructure, and community engagement, these projects will help the city thrive economically, culturally, and socially.  Furthermore, Connected Canterbury will be used as a catalyst for continued renewal and regeneration into the future.

So, the message is clear: For residents and visitors Canterbury is a city that honours its past, embraces its present, and looks forward to a sustainable, vibrant future where people can explore  transformed spaces, enjoy new amenities, and discover the stories woven into every corner of our district; and for new companies and inward investors Canterbury will continue to be an open, attractive and welcoming place to do business.
